Playful Change was created to critically examine plastic use in toy packaging. Its identity reflects a hopeful future, with energetic bursts, smiling faces, and playful arrows that highlight the packaging’s reusable elements.

To begin the design process, L.O.L.’s slumber party toys were used for size reference. Custom box dielines were then created for each product through a detailed, trial-and-error process, that took several days to refine.

To encourage longer interaction, the packaging was designed to fold from a rectangle into a rounded square. Inside, transforming into a doll-sized bedroom, with furniture pieces that make the package part of the playset, enhancing imaginative play and reducing waste.

Consumer preferences, shipping rigidity, and a need for increasing profits make paper boxes like Playful Change’s a hard sell to businesses. As much as Playful Change’s redesigned box is more sustainable, it’s also even more fun.
